Below are the instructions for accessing the course

*** You must be a NOAA employee and you must first get registered
for the course by e-mailing dave.rowell@noaa.gov and heather.galan@noaa.gov.


The LINUX Essentials course is an on-line course with reading
assignments and practical exercises. There are no prerequisites 
for this course.   

The current version of this course is based on NWSTC authored materials 
to be download. These materials are all in the form of pdf files which 
have reading materials and practical exercises.
 
Students must download the six pdf files :
1-intro.pdf  
2-file.info.pdf  
3-file.ops.pdf  
4-moreSHell.pdf  
5-file.edit.pdf  
6-final.eval.pdf  

Then read the pdf materials and perform the exercises contained therein.  

After reading a module you be required to perform some practical 
exercises on the NWSTC student server.  To acccess the student server 
you will need a remote terminal program - PuTTY and a username and 
password. 


Username = (Will be issued to you via e-mail within 5 working days.)

             If you do not receive account/password information within
             a week - contact Dave Rowell or Heather Galan at NWSTC.


									
Instructions for Downloading and Configuring PuTTY to reach the 
Student Server (uu133) at the National Weather Service Training 
Center. 


Step 1: 	Download the PuTTY executable for Windows from 
the Web. Search for "OpenSSH" and choose a site that offers free 
downloads.  Find the putty.exe file for Windows 95, 98, 2000 etc. 
and download it to your PC.

Step 2:		Execute PuTTY or double click on the icon "putty.exe"

       		The PuTTY configuration box will appear.


Step 3:         Adjust the configuration to avoid timing out while in
                a training session.

                From the Main Putty configuration screen, in the menu to 
                the left, click on "Connection"

                The new configuration screen will have "Seconds between
                keepalives (0 to turn off)". Put 60 in the box.

                Also, (if available in your version) check the box labeled
                "Enable TCP keepalives (SO_KEEPALIVE option)".   


Step 4:         In the "Host Name (or IP address)" window enter: 

                                                    204.227.127.133

		Port: 			22

		Protocol:		SSH

		Saved Sessions:	uu133

		
Step 5:		Click the "Save" button

Step 6:		In the window under the "Saved Sessions" window. 

			Click on "uu133" to highlight the entry.

		Click "Load"

		Click "Open"
	
		A window will open with a "login as:" prompt.  	
		
	OR

		Double click on "uu133".

		A window will open with a "login as:" prompt. 


You are now connected to the student server uu133.nwstc.noaa.gov 
at the training center.

Login with your username and password.


Instructions for completing the exercises are all in the 
self-contained draft NWSTC authored pdf materials. 


IMPORTANT NOTE:  If you get disconnected from the student server 
and were in the multiple choice section, you will have to 
re-connect and start that chapter again.  If you were doing the 
practical section, re-connect and continue where you left off.
